A Word from Huldah: The Christian Case for Self- Defense

Reading the news headlines today causes us to think and perhaps rethink our stance on owning a gun. With violence erupting seemingly out of nowhere in our society, people who would have never dreamed of owning a gun are seriously considering what was formerly for some, unthinkable. Of those pondering, many are Christians.

Of all the people in the world, true Christians are the ones who tend to be the most forgiving and the least likely to defend themselves if attacked. The message has been sent to Christians that they are not to resist evil in any form as this violates God’s commands, but is that really what the Bible teaches Christians? Or could this be another tactic of Satan to beat Christians into submission and conformity?

In The Life and Death Debate: Moral Issues of Our Time, leading Christian apologists James Porter Moreland and Norman L. Geisler wrote:

"To permit a murder when one could have prevented it is morally wrong. To allow a rape when one could have hindered it is an evil. To watch an act of cruelty to children without trying to intervene is morally inexcusable. In brief, not resisting evil is an evil of omission, and an evil of omission can be just as evil as an evil of commission. Any man who refuses to protect his wife and children against a violent intruder fails them morally."
